The Hive

March 13, 2012

A few weeks ago, I mentioned my impending travel plans that will keep me very busy for the next few months. I’m especially excited about my trip to Berlin because I’ll be speaking at a European blogging conference called The Hive.

Started by three lovely ladies this year to help combat the jealousy we all feel at missing the famous Alt Design Summit, The Hive will be such a fun weekend meeting lots of creative people from all over Europe. I’m so looking forward to putting faces to the names I see all over the blogosphere!

I’ll be speaking about how to create a great DIY tutorial. I’m excited to put my communications experience to work!

If you’re a blogger in Europe, you can still get a ticket! If you’re not a blogger in Europe, you should still check out the adorable schedule the Hive ladies designed. It’s so cute with buzzing bees!

Finally Friday

March 9, 2012

1. A sneak peek of a project I’ll be showing you next week!

2. Chicken stew with butternut squash and quinoa. Yum.

3. Apartment Therapy was doing a breakfast week. Let’s just say I’ve saved at least 17 recipes that look delish. This is cranberry pistachio quinoa breakfast cookies. Yes, I’ve got a thing for quinoa at the moment.

4. I ordered a bunch of supplies from Amazon for my parents to bring when they come in a few weeks. Top of the list? Gold spray paint. Oh, the fun we’ll have!

5. I brought this dress home from Zara earlier in the week. I love how it looks like a watercolor painting!

For most of this week, I was a bit smug and quite proud of myself that I squeezed so much into last weekend. But last night, it all caught up with me. I took an accidental nap (hate those!) that lasted three hours and after an hour awake, went straight back to bed for another seven hours. Oops.

But happily I think that means I’ll have lots of energy for my ever-growing to-do list this weekend! And luckily, it’s a fun list. Lots of projects, writing, and a little basketball-watching and birthday-celebrating. Hopefully I’ll also relax a little more than last weekend!

What are you planning this weekend? Any fun recipes, projects or plans? I hope whatever you do, it’s lovely and relaxing!

A Paddy’s Day Postcard

March 8, 2012

Every year I mean to send Christmas cards. And every year I miss the boat. This year I got a little clever and sent an e-card. It was fun, but not nearly as satisfying as knowing you’ve sent real mail.

So this year I got it in my head that it was totally okay that I flaked on sending Christmas cards because I could send postcards for Paddy’s Day! It works especially well because we live here in Dublin and I feel like it’s a holiday we have a ton of credibility for with American friends, but I think it would work well for anyone with a little Irish pride!

It’s a sweet and simple way to brighten up March!

I carved a simple shamrock with three leaves from a piece of rubber stamp material using a lino cutting tool. You could probably use an Xacto knife and a rubber stamp or even a paring knife and a potato!

I used a silvery gold stamp because I’m not so fond of things that are overly St. Patrick’s Day themed. I wanted a more subtle effect.

Then I used little letter stamps to write out dia duit, which is hello in Irish. It’s pronounced dee-ya gwitch. At least according to my husband who’s a guidance counselor in an Irish speaking school. I figure he can be our authority for this project.

(Aren’t my real shamrocks sweet? We have three plants outside our front door!)

Then I just flipped over the piece of card and created a postcard template to write on, including space for the address and a stamp.

And now you can send sweet Paddy’s Day greetings around the world! Enjoy!

Weekend Projects: Easy Framing Trick

March 6, 2012

Good morning, friends! I had every intention of telling you all about my weekend yesterday, but then my weekend just didn’t stop! Monday was just as packed as the other two days as I tried to use up every minute before heading back to work today.

But I think you’ll forgive me because I have lots of fun posts planned for this week. So without further ado, a new and easy way to frame artwork.

For the last year or so, we’ve had these white frames on the wall in our front room. Because you have to walk through the front room to get to the rest of the house, it serves as kind of an entryway/landing strip/storage space. For the last year, the white frames have looked like this:

Big frames with little frames hanging inside on colored ribbons. They looked sweet, but a little blah. When I found these lobster tea towels at the Maine Pantry in Portland during my visit last November, I thought they’d make a great update.

I think I found these particular frames by the side of the road and the glass was long gone. And I didn’t really like the idea of trying to properly frame the tea towels or even trying to wrap them around cardboard and fit them in.

Enter foam core and pretty pins. I cut two pieces of foam core (which is just poster board with foam in the middle) down to fit the frames and hot glued them in so they would sit flush with the edge of the frames. Then I cut the tea towels down to size and pinned them into the foam core with pretty colored pins. (Try these pins – the little balls on the ends are different colors. I have the red book and it was a gift from a sweet friend!)

I love this new system for three reasons. First, if I get sick of the lobsters (which I don’t think I will any time soon!), I can swap them out for another set of tea towels or prints or artwork. Second, it was fast and cheap. Even though foam core is expensive in this country, the whole project probably cost me €20, including the tea towels!

Lastly, I really like how they almost look like laundry hanging on a line. For that reason, I chose not to iron the tea towels. I was going for a rustic look and it has absolutely nothing to do with how much I hate ironing.

How’s that for a little Tuesday trick? Oh, and also. How cute are those lobsters? It’s like they’re greeting me with a happy dance every time I walk in the front door!

Me, Elsewhere: My Life as a Blog on Blogstar

February 22, 2012

Yesterday Sarah from Blogstar posted what I wrote about my life as a blogger here in Dublin, and how writing my blog allowed me to feel at home here. I’ve talked a little bit about how hard it was for me to move to Dublin here on From China Village, but this really sums it up.

Thanks for reading!

Romance on Grafton Street

February 21, 2012

Strolling up Grafton Street in the chilly wind last weekend, it occurred to me that you could make a pretty romantic date out of this common Dublin tourist destination.

First, check out the buskers. Buskers are the street musicians and Grafton Street is one of the most popular spots for street music.

I’d never seen this piano-playing guy before and he made my day. He was playing and grinning, surrounded by all these people who were grinning too. It was so nice! I’m not sure how he got his piano onto the street, but I hope he had a friend with a van.

FCV Edit: My friend Kate saw my post and said she went to school with the mystery piano man and his name is Luke Slott. Thanks, Kate!

{I’m pretty sure he also has a leprechaun on his keyboard. Can’t beat that.}

Next, stop into Butler’s Chocolate Cafe for one of their yummy hot chocolates. Butler’s is an Irish chain of coffee and chocolate shops and they make their hot chocolate by mixing hot milk with gooey chocolate fudge sauce and topping it with whipped cream and chocolate shavings. They also serve each drink with a complimentary chocolate. Because you need more chocolate with your hot chocolate.

{Would you check out the line all the way out the door?! I’m not the only one who needed a little chocolate fix.}

I usually toss the chocolate in my bag and remember it a few days later. It’s the perfect surprise treat!

And finally, I’d say it would be pretty romantic to hop in this guy’s horse and carriage ride at the top of Grafton Street. He was a little crochety and his paddy hat was perfect. I bet he could tell you some great tidbits about the city as well!

Now that would be one romantic date and a great way to enjoy Dublin!

Travel Plans: Berlin Style

February 16, 2012

Over the next few months, things start to get a little nutty around here. I’ll spare you the dates, but it starts at the end of March and goes something like this: parents visit,  Easter in Limerick (don’t ask, I blame basketball), sister visits, trip somewhere with my sister, long weekend in Spain, long weekend in Berlin, five weeks in America.

And by the first of July, I’ll be back in Dublin and will probably need until Christmas to recuperate. Ha! But all that to say I took a peek online at apartments to rent in Berlin today and was struck by the spare, white-washed style.

Would you check out that wall in the last image? I never thought so much concrete and cement could seem a bit cozy but with the light streaming in and the various textures, it doesn’t look too harsh.

I don’t think I’d have the discipline to live in apartments like these, but I’d love to try it out for a few days.

I’m not yet at the point of actually figuring out where I’m going to stay, but if any of these are in the vicinity of the conference I’ll be attending, sign me up.

I collected a few of my favorite tips for staying in rental apartment here. I think staying in an apartment is a great way to really experience living in that place like a local. Have you ever stayed in an apartment while traveling? And have you ever been to Berlin? I’d love tips for a little sightseeing while I’m there!

Four Date Ideas for Valentine’s or Not!

February 14, 2012

{a fort and a fire. what more could you ask for?!}

My Valentine’s Day plans are less than exciting and involve barely seeing my husband except for a few minutes to scarf down leftovers before running out the door again! But even though we’re lame, I thought Valentine’s Day might be a good reminder to us that we could put a little more thought and effort into a romantic date one of these days.

Michael and I don’t have too many free evenings during the school year because he plays and coaches so much basketball in the evenings. When we do find ourselves with a free evening, I often get stumped. Going out for dinner and a movie just seems so predictable (and often expensive!). But in Dublin, it often seems that’s all there is to do. So I’ve been brainstorming sweet little date ideas this week.

Here are a few ideas, but I’d really love to hear yours too!

Build a fire and make s’mores. In college, there was a dorm up the hill that had a fire place that anyone could use. I can’t remember the details, perhaps there was some kind of safety requirement, but I think you just had to order the wood! Anyway, one evening, I surprised Michael and got a fire going to make s’mores, just the two of us. Well, I’m pretty sure he had to build the fire, but I definitely brought the s’mores ingredients!

Make a fort. I know it sounds wacky, but doesn’t it also sound awesome? It doesn’t have to be a traditional fort, perhaps something more casual like this or this? And bring wine, I think a fort with a glass of wine might be a little heavenly.

Take a hike and plan a picnic. For our anniversary last year, we packed dinner, drinks and a blanket and hiked up Howth to watch the sunset. Or if it’s too cold, you could drive to a nice look-out spot with a thermos of hot chocolate and enjoy the view.

Plan a surprise. Sometimes half the battle with planning a date is deciding what it will be. When Michael decides for me, it’s such a relief! Although I do have to be careful – a few months ago Michael tried to take me to Bingo in a tough neighborhood near us as a surprise cultural experience date. Good thing I weasled it out of him! I think we went to dinner and a movie instead. Go figure.

And here’s a little bonus idea – Amanda from Wit & Whistle planned a fun date night with her husband and they painted together. What a sweet idea!

Do you have any creative date ideas? Hope you have a happy Valentine’s Day!

My Boarding Pass on PRÊT À VOYAGER

February 13, 2012

Good morning! Happy Monday everyone. Did you have a good weekend? I spent the weekend working, but still managed to squeeze in some baking, a beach walk and a few evenings visiting with friends.

I’m back in work unexpectedly today, so I’m going to get back to press releases and radio interviews. In the meantime, you can pop over to Anne’s lovely blog, Pret a Voyager, where she kindly asked me to participate in her Boarding Pass series.

Anne lives in Paris and her blog has some of the best tips about visiting the city. We swore by her guide that breaks down Paris by arrondissement when we visited last time. And for a little insight into Parisian swimming pools, check out her observations here. You’ll be surprised!

And don’t forget – you have until Friday to enter the giveaway for an Irish cutting board from Little Hill Designs!

See you all tomorrow!
